  • Unique Cigar Humidors

Posted on March 18, 2009 by SwissTGallery

While the cigar humidors you can purchase in most stores or online are standard boxes, there are some very unique humidors out there. Just like any collectable, some people have taken the traditional humidor and turned it into a work of art. While most of these humidors are in private collections, some do come up for sale at auctions. You can also often have a unique humidor made, although again, it will be quite expensive.

Some of these cigar humidors are still simple boxes, but they've been decorated in unique ways. Some include the owner's initials or name etched on the lid. Others have designs burned into the lid. If you're looking to make a custom cigar humidor, this will be the most affordable.

Another unique cigar humidor looks like a book. These humidors appear like a standard hard back novel, but when you open the book, it reveals your cigar collection. This type of humidor typically doesn't hold very many cigars, but it is a very classy, unique type of humidor that few people will own.

Some cigar humidors are built as pyramids instead of square boxes. This design is somewhat traditional; however, one of the downsides of a pyramid humidor is that the upper shelves in the humidor are really too small do to much with, while getting to the more usable lower shelves can be difficult since you have to take out all of the shelves above them. However, these are unique looking humidors that can add a different look to your collection.

Finally, there are the very expensive unique humidors. These humidors don't look like cigar humidors at all. One unique humidor, for example, has been made to look like the United States capital building. This humidor is almost two feet wide and two feet tall, making it a huge box. The details are incredible-each window is clearly visible, as are the support pillars and domes. These humidors are rarely found, and if you do see one for sale, you'll have to pay a lot of money for it.

  • The Three Types of Watch Winders

Posted on March 10, 2009 by SwissTGallery

There are many different automatic watch winders available on the market today, but not all of them are the same.  While style and design do vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, what also varies is the overall type of watch winder. Watch winder companies generally categories their watch winders as strictly functional, very elegant, or simply extravagant.

Functional watch winders simply keep your watched wound.  They are mostly simple devices that hold your watches.  Often, these functional watch winders don’t have a door or other cover—the watch sites right on the exterior of the winder.  This means you’ll need a table or shelf to put the winder on.  Some of these functional watch winders move watches around in patterns that resemble carousels or even carnival rides.  Generally, these are the cheapest automatic watch winders since they don’t provide any extra frills.

Elegant watch winders, on the other hand, are a little fancier.  They are usually fully enclosed boxes, which mean your watches will be better protected and the device will look nicer overall.  They’re usually made of high quality, finished wood that gleams.  You can display these watch winders on a table or desk, and some of the most expensive ones even hang on the wall.  Elegant watch winders may hold as few as a couple watches or can hold a dozen or so.

Finally, there’s the really extravagant automatic watch winder.  There are a number of different high-end watch winders, many of which feature a ton of extras.  Some actually have small heaters in them to keep the watches near the human body temperature.  Others have drawers for storing your watch accessories.  Many are hung on the wall and display your watches through glass doors.  If you don’t see a watch winder you like, you can even have one custom-made with any unique features you like.

  • Wood Used in Cigar Humidors

Posted on February 26, 2009 by SwissTGallery

When it comes to making cigar humidors, three types of wood are generally used.  The most popular is Spanish cedar, but American/Canadian red cedar or Honduran mahogany can also be used.

Spanish cedar is very popular in humidors for several reasons.  Because of its special scent, Spanish cedar is not appealing to tobacco worms.  This ensures that your cigars are well-protected.  The wood also has a high rate of humidity absorption.  This means that the climate inside the humidor will be very stable, and no mold will grow on the inside.  Spanish cedar also helps the cigar’s age and helps preserve the flavor and scent of the cigars.  Spanish cedar doesn’t actually come from Spain, as one would expect.  Instead, it is grown in Center and South America, especially Brazil.

American or Canadian red cedar is another good choice for cigar humidors, although it does not absorb moister out of the air as well as Spanish cedar.  It also has a more intense scent to it.  However, red cedar is less expensive than Spanish cedar, allowing manufacturers to create more affordable cigar humidors.  True cigar aficionados, however, will not want to use red cedar for humidors if they plan on storing cigars for long periods of time because the cigars will pick up the wood’s strong flavor.

Finally, Honduran mahogany is another popular wood.  It absorbs moister as well as Spanish cedar does, and it has less of an odor than either Spanish or American/Canadian cedar.  However, it does not repel worms as well and does not flavor the cigars as well as Spanish cedar does.

  • Watch Winders as a Gift

Posted on February 16, 2009 by SwissTGallery

Finding the perfect gift can be difficult, but if you know someone who loves to collect watches, a watch winder may be the perfect gift.  However, there are some things you’ll need to know before you purchase a watch winder.  First, you’ll want to have an idea of how much money you want to spend.  Obviously, larger watch winders (those that hold more watches) will be more expensive.  You may think you need to buy a large watch winder to hold all of the watches your friend or relative owns, but that may not be the case.  For example, if you’re giving a watch winder to a relative who has several heirloom watches, you may want to buy them a watch winder specifically for those.  In that case, a two piece or four piece watch winder may be enough.

If you are looking for a watch winder large enough to hold all of the watches your friend or relative owns, you first need to know exactly how many watches he or she has.  Then you can purchase a watch winder large enough.  If money is no object, you may even want to purchase a larger watch winder so your friend has room to enlarge his or her collection.

Finally, if you’re planning on purchasing a large watch winder for your friend, be sure he or she has the space for it.  A 24 piece watch winder, for example, can take up a lot of room.  In fact, it is usually hung on the wall or sat on a table.  A 12 piece watch winder, likewise, is also pretty good size.

  • Benefits of Buying Multiple Watch Winders

Posted on February 8, 2009 by SwissTGallery

When purchasing a watch winder, you may be tempted to by a large watch winder display—a twelve or 24 piece display, for example.  The benefit here is that you can display your entire watch collection in one place.  However, the downside is that these larger displays can take up a good amount of room.  In fact, the 24 piece watch winder is a very impressive display and looks fantastic.  On the other hand, there are some benefits to having smaller watch winder displays.

One of the benefits of purchasing multiple watch winders to display your collection instead of one large watch winder cabinet is that you can split up your collection.  You can arrange a couple of smaller watch winder holders on a table or put them on several different book shelves.  You may want to set up your study to show off your collection, but you may want to display some of your watches in a different room.  For example, if you have a pair of watches you inherited from your father or grandfather, you may want to proudly display them on the mantle in your living room.  To do that, you might want to buy a two piece watch winder for those watches and a larger watch winder for the rest of your collection.

Purchasing several small watch winders is also a great way of taking parts of your collection for display or trade.  You could always take your watches out of the winders and show them off that way, but they will look much nicer in a watch winder display.  Keeping them in a display will also make certain they don’t get dirty or damaged and that no one walks away with one of your watches.

  • Different Types of Watch Winders

Posted on December 26, 2008 by SwissTGallery

There are several different types of watch winders. Beyond these different types, each type of watch winder can be purchased to hold either one watch or a larger number. There are even some automatic watch winders that can hold up to 24 different watches. While most people probably don’t have that many watches, watch collectors may need to invest in one of these large watch winders.

Beyond size, what kind of watch winders is there? There are three different types: functional, elegant, and extravagant.

Functional watch winders are smallish boxes or cases that usually need to be kept on a table or a shelf. The watch fits into the watch winder’s padded, raised surface. Once in place, the watch winder turns the watch every now and then in a way that simulates human arm movement. This keeps the watch running.

An elegant watch winder does more than just keep a watch running. These watch winders are, as the name suggests, fancier than functional watch winders. They’re usually a completely enclosed box and are made out of nice wood or leather. These watch winders can be set on a table, desk, or shelf. Those that only hold a few watches can be placed inside a drawer or in a safety deposit box for security.

Finally, extravagant watch winders are absolute luxurious. These winders keep your watches running, provide heaters to keep your watches at body temperature, feature drawers for storing other items, and more. Extravagant watch winders are really only for the high-end collector since they are very expensive.

Most new collectors will go for functional watch winders, while those who have spent some time building up their collection may want to spend a bit more money and go for the incredibly nice extravagant winders.

  • What is a Cigar Humidor?

Posted on December 21, 2008 by SwissTGallery

If you don’t smoke cigars regularly or are just getting into the habit, you may not know what a cigar humidor is. Basically, it’s a small box (or it can be a room, but only the biggest cigar collectors actually big a room-sized cigar humidor) that keeps a constant humidity and sometimes temperature. These boxes are used to keep cigars and pipe tobacco at a constant humidity so that they are fresh and keep their scent. Humidors, both box and room-sized ones, use a hygrometer to read the humidity level inside the box.

There are several different types of small humidors. The first is a table humidor. It can usually hold up to between 300 and a thousand cigars. While a table humidor is very heavy, it is possible to use one as a portable humidor. Table humidors generally have a polished wooded exterior accented with marble or leather.

A personal humidor is really what a casual cigar smoker would want. These humidors can only hold around 100 to 250 cigars. Since most casual smokers may not have that many cigars, a personal humidor can often be the only humidor needed since there will always be space in it for new cigars.

If you travel a lot or have a very small cigar collection, you may want to purchase a travel humidor. Travel humidors can carry up to around 50 or so cigars. They’re lighter than both table and personal humidors so you can more easily take them with you wherever you go.

All of these humidors keep the inside humidity between 65 and 75% relative humidity. The more cigars inside the humidor, the slower the humidity will drop.

  • What is a Watch Winder?

Posted on December 16, 2008 by SwissTGallery

Many people have probably never heard of a watch winder. Only those who collect watches really know what a watch winder is. Basically, it keeps any self winding watch running when it’s not being used as an every day time piece. Self winding watches wind themselves via a moving weight. This weight is rotated by the movement of the arm while the watch is being worn. However, when it’s not being worn, the watch can quickly run down.

To avoid this, watches can be placed in a watch winder. A watch winder can hold one or more watches and keep them all running while they aren’t being worn. It does this by moving the watch in a circular motion. This keeps the weight inside the watch moving just as if the watch was being worn.

While you may be afraid of over-winding your watch, it’s not possible. Automatic watches have a small mechanism that automatically stops the weight from moving, thus keeping it from over-winding. This way, you can leave your watches in your watch winder for as long as you want without worrying about causing them any damage. Actually, only about 30 minutes of movement is necessary to keep an automatic watch wound. After that, the weight is locked in place.

You don’t absolutely need to purchase a watch winder unless you have multiple automatic watches. If you wear only one watch at a time and aren’t worried about your older automatic watches running down, then you may not need a watch winder. However, if you’re going to collect automatic watches and want them all keeping time, you’ll need to invest in some watch winders.

  • Jewelry Boxes Make a Great Gift

Posted on December 8, 2008 by SwissTGallery

If you’re looking for a great gift for your wife, girlfriend, mother, sister, or any woman, really, you may want to consider purchasing a jewelry box. There are a variety of different types of jewelry boxes available, though, and it may be hard to tell which one your special someone would like.

To help you select a jewelry box, you need to know a little bit about the person you plan on giving it to. It helps to know how much jewelry she has and what type she has. If she has a lot of necklaces, for example, you’ll want to get a jewelry box that includes a section to hang them. While necklaces can be put in any jewelry box, they do tend to get tangles up with one another unless they’re hung. Some jewelry boxes, likewise, contain more ring holders or larger separated sections to hold bigger broaches or pieces of jewelry.

There are other options you may want to consider as well. Some jewelry boxes feature mirrors on the lid, allowing the woman to see how necklaces or earrings look when worn. Some feature fold-out sections, while others use mostly drawers. Another good thing to know is if the person you intend to give the jewelry box to travels a lot. If so, you might want to look for a jewelry box that is fairly small and closes securely. There are some jewelry boxes specifically made for travel, although some jewelry boxes can be used as a mobile jewelry box even if they aren’t specifically made for travel.

No matter what type of jewelry box you settle on, she’s sure to enjoy having extra room to store her jewelry, and of course she will appreciate the time and thought you put into selecting the perfect jewelry box for her.
