  • What is a Watch Winder?

Posted on July 8, 2009 by SwissTGallery

For those of us who own expensive, collectible, or otherwise precious watches it is wise to invest in a wooden watch winder. A watch winder will ensure that your time piece is kept accurate when you are not wearing it, extend the life of your watch by keeping everything in motion and lubricated, and also keep it safe from dust when it is not being worn.

  • Purchasing a Wooden Watch Winder

Posted on June 16, 2009 by SwissTGallery

One of the most beautiful types of watch winders out there are wooden watch winders. While some watch winders are encased in metal or even a type of plastic, these watch winders are sometimes cheaper looking and oftentimes not very high quality at all.

  • Features of an Automatic Watch Winder

Posted on March 29, 2009 by SwissTGallery

When it comes to purchasing an automatic watch winder, there are several things you need to pay attention to. The size of the watch winder, while important, is not the only factor in deciding which one to purchase. There are other things you should take into consideration.

The first is the motor. Many watch winders feature a loud motor that you can hear whenever you're in the room. This can be especially disruptive if you keep your watch collection in your home office or library. The constant noise can be enough to drive you crazy. These loud motors are a sign of an inefficient, cheaply built watch winder. If you're OK with this loud noise, then you can save a bit of money and buy a cheap winder. However, if you're a true collector, you want a watch winder that is well-built, and that includes a quiet motor. This will mean paying a bit more, of course, but the silence may be well worth it.

Some watch winder motors also only move in one direction. This means the motion is somewhat repetitive, and this repetitive motion can actually cause extra wear on a watch's winding mechanism. If you'll be constantly keeping a watch in the winder (which you shouldn't do-you should wear a watch at least once a week), you'll want a watch winder that includes a variable direction motor.

You may also want to purchase a watch winder with a timer. This allows you to set the watch winder to only operate for an hour or so, then stop for several hours. This insures that your watches will not be over-wound. You can also purchase watch winders that run off of alternative power sources-some can run on both batteries and on AC power. Keep all of these features in mind when you're looking to purchase a watch winder and you won't be disappointed.

  • Watch Winders and Turns per Day

Posted on March 24, 2009 by SwissTGallery

If you're looking to purchase a watch winder, you may hear the term turns per day, or TPD. Some watch winder salesmen may swear by turns per day, but it's really just a rough guideline. Basically, turns per day is the absolute minimum turns necessary to wind a watch from being completely unwound to being fully wound. However, watches set in a watch winder should not be constantly would, and it doesn't always need to be would 100% all the time.

Watch winders don't all work the same way, of course. The number of turns one watch winder needs to wind up a watch may be completely different from the number of turns another winder needs. Because of this, turns per day can't really be used to directly compare different types of watch winders. It can, however, be used to tell how efficient each type of watch winder is. Some winders may actually do too many turns per day for your watches.

There's no set number of turns per day that you should look for. Instead, you should take into account how much movement is necessary to keep the watch at least partially wound. You don't want it to run completely down, but at the same time, it's not necessary to keep a watch 100% wound, either. Generally, you want a winder that will use the least number of turns necessary to wind up a watch. This will avoid overstressing the winding mechanism and causing unnecessary wear and tear on the watch's movement mechanism.

  • The Three Types of Watch Winders

Posted on March 10, 2009 by SwissTGallery

There are many different automatic watch winders available on the market today, but not all of them are the same.  While style and design do vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, what also varies is the overall type of watch winder. Watch winder companies generally categories their watch winders as strictly functional, very elegant, or simply extravagant.

Functional watch winders simply keep your watched wound.  They are mostly simple devices that hold your watches.  Often, these functional watch winders don’t have a door or other cover—the watch sites right on the exterior of the winder.  This means you’ll need a table or shelf to put the winder on.  Some of these functional watch winders move watches around in patterns that resemble carousels or even carnival rides.  Generally, these are the cheapest automatic watch winders since they don’t provide any extra frills.

Elegant watch winders, on the other hand, are a little fancier.  They are usually fully enclosed boxes, which mean your watches will be better protected and the device will look nicer overall.  They’re usually made of high quality, finished wood that gleams.  You can display these watch winders on a table or desk, and some of the most expensive ones even hang on the wall.  Elegant watch winders may hold as few as a couple watches or can hold a dozen or so.

Finally, there’s the really extravagant automatic watch winder.  There are a number of different high-end watch winders, many of which feature a ton of extras.  Some actually have small heaters in them to keep the watches near the human body temperature.  Others have drawers for storing your watch accessories.  Many are hung on the wall and display your watches through glass doors.  If you don’t see a watch winder you like, you can even have one custom-made with any unique features you like.
